When you tell people that you are a model, they instantly think about a jet-set life and a lot of glamour. Also it's a big myth that as a model, it's just some easy posing and yeah, there are the pictures and the money! In fact, it takes a lot of effort (and luck) to achieve something.
In general, there are two different types of days for a model: You go to Castings or you work. I will write about a typical Casting day in this blog post.
It all starts the day before when you get your Castings via E-Mail from your booker.
Most of the time I get something between 2 and 7 castings per day. It's good because if you don't go to castings, you won't get jobs. Sometimes you are lucky enough to get a direct booking which means the client won't see you live before the job, but that's not the normal case.
So, on the next day I get up, eat some breakfast and I'm mostly already on the run to a client. I always carry a quite heavy bag with essentials with me: mobile phone, second mobile phone (from the agency for emergencies in case my first one dies - crazy, right?), lip balm, water, my book with all my pictures on it (I use a tablet for that actually), a bunch of sedcards and of course: high heels. I change them at the castings, for walking around Milan I always use my Nikes.
Normally it's my task to handle my appointments, so I can decide on my own when I exactly want to go to the casting you see above. Most of the time I can manage it, but there are situations where I got so many castings so close together concerning the time that it would not be possible for me to go everywhere. If that's the case, I tell my wonderful agency and they reorganize my schedule so that it's manageable for me. The appointments are all at different places, so you need something between 20 minutes and an hour to get from one place to another.
When I arrive at the casting, there are other models who are already waiting. Sometimes the girls arrive even a bit earlier for big castings to avoid the queue which will build up. Lucky me went to an appointment last week where the client already preselected the girls so we were only 10 girls in total, but it can be the case that you are girl number 302 the client sees on this day. If there are so many models at the same place, there's a list somewhere to manage the chaos a bit more. Unfortunately there are also big castings with no list so you basically just go there and ask: Hello, is there a list? No? Okay, then who was the last one? You will hopefully get a correct answer then, now it's just your challenge to remember the face because so many girls look very similar.
Now it's my turn: I quickly comb through my hair, apply some lip balm and walk towards the client. Most of the time they sit somewhere together with other people like the photographer (almost always there), art director, producer, etc. I say Hello, I'm Kat, nice to meet you and give them my book and my sedcard. Very popular questions are: Where are you from? How old are you? The client wants to make some polas from you occasionally or he might want to see your profile or your hands. Now the casting is over and I'm already on my way to the next one. That's basically it. When I'm at home, I'll make myself something to eat (or I eat out as you might have seen on my Instagram), take a shower (it's still so hot during the day, 38C° are kind of normal) and plan my castings for the next day.
How about you, could you imagine doing this?
